About Us

Mwangaza means LIGHT in Kiswahili. Mwangaza Community Development Group is a group aiming to bring light for the community! It is developing the community called Likoni and fighting against the ills of society created by poverty and ignorance.

Mwangaza is developing the community together with its members through education, employment, environmental conservation, and providing access to medication and support groups.

HISTORY

Mwangaza Likoni Community Development Group was created by active local community members in 2008. Children in the area had no access to school and orphans had no shelters, elders were living alone with no assistance and local youths were idle having no fees for the education and no work opportunities.

Mr Onkangi and his family initiated projects and changed their own house into a school and orphanage. Soon elders of the community started gathering in their house once a week forming a support group and youths formed an environmental conservation group.

Now Mwangaza group has rented a bigger building for the school and the orphanage is still operating in Onkangi's own house.

The best thing with Mwangaza is that it is a grass-root organisation with members who recognize the real needs of the community. Mwangaza has humble people working for it who are respected by the surrounding community. The group tries to respect all cultures and religions in the community and they possess will and skills to make a big difference in the community with positive development for all needy and afflicted.

Now Mwangaza Likoni has four ongoing projects:

1. St Peter Mwangaza Nursery and Primary school
2. Mwangaza Orphanage
3. Mercy Elderly women's support group
4. Youth for Natural Conservation action group

What is Likoni?

Likoni is a very poor constituency in Mombasa Kenya with drastic and imminent problems of poverty, which are causing children and youth to suffer on a daily basis. AIDS is killing parents and many orphans are wondering on the streets seeking for food, clothing, shelter, medication and education. Life is getting more expensive every day and there are practically no jobs available in Likoni as unemployment rates are staggering.

All members of the community from children to the elderly are suffering from the high cost of living and from the poor standards of housing and schooling.

Drug abuse and crime levels are very high in the area amongst the youth who have no work and no money for attending education. Elderly is alone or living with orphans trying to survive with basic skills. Schools are overcrowded and the fees are too high for the big families to pay so many children stay home and do not attend to education.

These are just a few problems in the community. We are trying to fight against the problems of poverty and ignorance through establishing accessible schools, nurseries, orphanages and community centres in which we teach and guide people towards better life.
